Preliminary Practices

Preliminary practices refer to a set of spiritual practices that are specifically aimed at purification of negativity and accumulation of merits. These include amongst others, the 100,000 repetitions of Vajrasattva mantra, 100,000 prostration, 100,000 repetitions of a Guru's name mantra, 100,000 repetitions of offering of water bowls. It is customary in the Tibetan tradition for a practitioner to undertake one or several of these preliminary practices before engaging in a long-term three-year retreat on a deity yoga meditation. The practice is particularly popular in the Kagyü School of Tibetan Buddhism.
