The Tibetan Buddhist Library

Lamdre

Literally meaning 'Path and goal'. A unique collection of meditative practices related to the tantric deity Hevajra, which are preeminent in the Sakya school. Lamdre instructions outline the entire theory and practice of the Mahayana path as presented in the contemplative tradition of the Sakyapas. The origins of the Lamdre lineage are traced to the Indian tantric yogin Virupa, from whom the lineage continued to Krishnacarya and Dombipa. The Lamdre lineage was introduced to Tibet by the Tibetan translator Drohmi Lotsawa, who imparted the transmission to the great Sakya master Kunga Nyingpo .

The basis of Lamdre is the experience that as to their true nature, the cycle of existence (samsara) and liberation therefrom (nirvana) are not different.
