Guru Yoga

Known as 'the axle of the path to enlightenment,' Guru Yoga is an integral part of a daily spiritual practice of a Tibetan Buddhist. The essence of this practice is the cultivation of the perception of one's own mind as indivisible from the nature of the Guru's mind. "Guru," which is a Sanskrit term has the meaning of someone who is unexcelled thus connoting the idea of one's teacher being the supreme object of veneration. The Tibetan equivalent of the term is Lama, which also shares the same etymology. A typical Guru Yoga meditation would consist of visualizing the Guru, often in the form of an important historical master such as Tsongkhapa or Padmasambhava, at one's heart and then making series of offerings to the Guru. The practice of Guru Yoga is common to all four Schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
